Hugh Grant “Hated” Playing an Oompa Loompa in “Wonka”

Jumping from romantic lead roles to more dramatic characters, Hugh Grant has taken on a variety of film roles throughout his career. However, his latest role in “Wonka” is far from romantic or dramatic, and according to Grant himself, it’s the one he hated the most.

During a press conference for the film, Grant, who is now 63, didn’t hold back when it came to describing his experience. He called it “drivel” and even compared the cameras he had to wear on his head for the animators to a “crown of thorns”, noting how uncomfortable they were.

“I made a big fuss about it,” Grant confessed. “I couldn’t have hated the whole thing more.”

In the film, Grant portrays Oompa Loompa Lofty, but he admitted that he was constantly confused about how he should act. In fact, much of what he did with his body was eventually replaced by an animator.

Even the dancing scenes, which are usually fun for actors, were not enjoyable for Grant because they were done entirely through animation. With the advancement of CGI, it’s become difficult for actors to discern what exactly is happening on screen.

But despite his complaints, Grant did find some joy in “messing around and trying new lines” during the filming process. It’s clear that even though he may not enjoy making films, he is willing to do it with a smile on his face.

While it’s highly unlikely that Grant will find himself playing an Oompa Loompa again in the future, it’s almost certain that he will continue to star in other films. And even if he doesn’t love the experience, he has his reasons.

“I slightly hate making films, but I have lots of children and need money,” Grant playfully admitted.
