Co-host of ‘The View’ triggers Matthew McConaughey, his reply is very unexpected

The tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas in May 2022 hit close to home for McConaughey, as he is a native of the city. Following the incident, where 19 students and two teachers lost their lives, McConaughey joined a briefing at the White House, urging Americans to reassess their priorities.

“We need responsible ownership, background checks, and stricter regulations,” McConaughey proclaimed during the briefing. He also called for a minimum age of 21 to purchase AR 15 rifles, waiting periods, red flag laws, and consequences for those who abuse them. As an advocate, McConaughey believes that responsible gun owners are tired of the Second Amendment being exploited by dangerous individuals.

In response to the tragedy, McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, launched the Greenlights Grant Initiative. This initiative aims to create safer environments in schools and protect the well-being of children.

Fast forward to an appearance on The View in fall 2023, where McConaughey was promoting his children’s book, Just Because. During the interview, co-host Sunny Hostin praised McConaughey’s commitment to speaking out against violence, particularly gun violence. She asked him if he saw political office in his future, given that he had previously considered running for governor of Texas.

McConaughey responded, “If it’s where I feel I can make the most impact, then yes. But for now, I want to focus on being the best father I can be.” However, Joy Behar, another co-host, pressed him further on his views regarding gun control and the possibility of being elected in Texas while holding anti-gun sentiments.

In a viral video clip, Behar’s questions seemed to strike a nerve with McConaughey. He made it clear that he wasn’t interested in playing political games, saying, “I’m not interested in playing.” Despite the tension, the conversation eventually shifted when Hostin acknowledged that McConaughey is actually an advocate for gun responsibility and legislative measures.

The encounter on The View highlighted McConaughey’s unwavering stance on responsible gun ownership and the need for sensible gun regulations. His dedication to protecting children and creating safer communities is evident in his work with the Greenlights Grant Initiative.
