Sinus Infection Turned Out to be Ultra-Rare Cancer

Annika, a brave young woman from California, went through a devastating ordeal when she lost her eye due to a rare form of cancer. This shocking discovery left her and her loved ones stunned.

Doctors thought I had a sinus infection - it was ultra-rare cancer

The Misdiagnosis and Unbearable Pain

It all started when Annika, only 28 years old, felt discomfort in the inner corner of her right eye one morning. Throughout the day, the pain became unbearable, and her eye began to swell significantly. Concerned for her health, she sought medical help.

Doctors initially mistook the “golf ball-sized tumor” that had spread across her face for a sinus infection. They attributed the pain and swelling to sinus issues and prescribed medication to treat a potential infection. Annika felt some relief for a week, but then the pain returned with even greater intensity.

A Devastating Diagnosis

During her second visit to the emergency room, doctors finally discovered the tumor next to her eye. It was a rare form of cancer called stage four sinonasal carcinoma SMARCB1. Tragically, the cancer had already spread to her face, lungs, and lymph nodes.

Sinonasal carcinoma is an aggressive form of cancer that affects only one percent of all head and neck cancers. Symptoms include nasal obstructions, headaches, protrusion of the eyeball, and nosebleeds. Annika’s case was incredibly rare, with fewer than 200 reported cases in medical literature.

Treatment and Hope for the Future

Annika embarked on chemotherapy treatments without hesitation. After nine weeks of therapy, there was a slight improvement, leading to surgery. Unfortunately, to remove the cancerous tissue, they also had to take Annika’s right eye.

In spite of the challenges she faces, Annika remains hopeful. She is currently undergoing an experimental treatment plan that includes chemotherapy and immunotherapy to slow the spread of the cancer. While the prognosis may not be ideal, Annika’s positive outlook and determination are commendable.

No doctor has given her a specific time frame for her life expectancy. This uncertainty does not deter Annika’s fighting spirit and determination to overcome this terrible disease.
