Olivia Rodrigo, the talented 21-year-old singer, is not shy about sharing her beliefs. During a recent concert in St. Louis, Missouri, as part of her Guts World Tour, Rodrigo made a powerful statement on the issue of reproductive rights.
Given the current limitations on abortion access in many states, including Missouri, after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, Rodrigo chose to take action. As a surprise gift to her fans, attendees were given a package containing two emergency contraception pills and information on abortion care through a service called Right By You.
Inside the package was a QR code that led fans to a donation page for the Missouri Abortion Fund. Accompanying the code was the text, “Funding abortion? It’s a good idea, right?”, cleverly referencing Rodrigo’s song “Bad Idea Right?” from her album Guts.
Rodrigo’s initiative, known as Fund 4 Good, aims to create a more equitable future for women and girls. This community-based non-profit organization supports girls’ education, reproductive rights, and the prevention of gender-based violence.
For her North American tour, Rodrigo partnered with the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF). Oriaku Njoku, the executive director of NNAF, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Supporting abortion funds has never been more critical, in an era where abortion access is under relentless attack. We are excited to be in partnership with Olivia Rodrigo as she uplifts the critical work of abortion funds and leads her fans into the movement towards reproductive freedom!”
While there has been a mix of reactions to Rodrigo’s bold move, with some praising her for raising awareness and others expressing anger or concern about the influence on her young fan base, one thing is clear: Olivia Rodrigo is using her platform to advocate for reproductive rights in a creative and impactful way.
