The Tragic Consequences of Leaving Babies Unattended

Babies are delicate and require constant adult supervision. Even a few minutes of neglect can lead to devastating outcomes. Today, we share a heartbreaking story that emphasizes the importance of being vigilant when caring for infants.

In Cleveland, a woman named Kristel Candelario made a decision that would forever change her life. She left her one-year-old daughter, Jailyn, alone in her playpen while she embarked on a 10-day vacation to Detroit and Puerto Rico. Upon her return, Candelario discovered a heartbreaking scene. Jailyn was no longer breathing.

Candelario now faces the consequences of her actions. She has pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in the death of her daughter. At the age of 32, she now faces a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. It is a tragedy that will stick with the prosecutor, Michael C. O’Malley, for years to come. He reminds us that as prosecutors, their duty is to seek justice for the victim:

“As prosecutors, it is our job to represent the victims, and today we spoke on behalf of 16-month-old Jailyn – who is no longer with us – due to the selfish decisions her mother made. This conviction today is the first step towards justice for Jailyn.”

While the prosecutors dropped some charges as part of a plea deal, the severity of Candelario’s actions cannot be understated. On June 6, 2023, she left her infant daughter alone at home, only to find her lifeless body upon her return on June 16. Jailyn had been lying in a playpen surrounded by soiled blankets, in a room filled with bedding stained with urine and feces.

The autopsy confirmed a heart-wrenching cause of death: starvation and severe dehydration. It is an unimaginable tragedy that underscores the importance of constant care and attention for our little ones.

As the court proceedings continue, Candelario’s attorneys have chosen not to comment on the case. They mention that their client is remorseful and has taken responsibility for her actions. They also allude to potential mitigating factors that may impact her sentencing. While they do acknowledge her mental health issues, they refrain from providing further details.

It is a difficult day for all parties involved. Candelario remains in jail on a $1 million bond, awaiting her official sentencing next month.

This heartbreaking story serves as a reminder to all of us to prioritize the safety and well-being of our children. Let us extend our thoughts and condolences to anyone who may be going through a similar tragedy. Nobody should have to endure such immense pain.
