Jon Stewart Announces the Loss of His Beloved Dog Dipper

Jon Stewart recently made his long-awaited return to host The Daily Show, and fans couldn’t be happier. While there have been plenty of laughs, last night’s episode also featured a heartfelt moment from the host. In a tearful announcement, Stewart revealed that his beloved three-legged rescue dog, Dipper, had passed away.

At the end of Monday’s show, Stewart set aside his trademark political satire to share a personal story with the audience. He recounted how 12-13 years ago, his two children wanted to raise money for Animal Haven, a no-kill animal shelter in NYC. The family set up a cupcake stand outside the shelter, and one of the employees brought out Dipper, a one-year-old brindle pitbull who had lost his right leg after being struck by a car in Brooklyn.

Stewart became emotional as he recalled their first meeting, even pulling out a tissue box from beneath his desk. “I thought I’d get further,” he joked to the audience. He went on to explain that he and his family brought Dipper home that day and named him after their unforgettable encounter. “In a world of good boys, he was the best,” Stewart lovingly expressed.

Dipper quickly became a part of Stewart’s Daily Show routine, accompanying him to the office every day. Over the years, Dipper had the pleasure of meeting numerous high-profile guests and became a beloved member of the Daily Show dog crew. Stewart reminisced, “We’d come to tape this show, and Dipper would wait for me to be done…And he met actors and authors and presidents and kings.”

Stewart lightened the mood by jokingly sharing a clip of Dipper startling Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai behind the scenes of the show. “He did what the Taliban could not do,” Stewart quipped with a smile.

In a heartfelt revelation, Stewart shared that Dipper peacefully passed away on Sunday, surrounded by his family. “He was ready. He was tired…but I wasn’t,” Stewart admitted with a heavy heart. He concluded by wishing for his audience to find their own special dog, their own Dipper, who would bring them joy and companionship like no other.

To honor Dipper’s memory, Stewart dedicated the nightly “Moment of Zen” to footage of Dipper happily playing in the snow. It was a fitting tribute to a dog who brought so much happiness and love into Stewart’s life.

Jon Stewart, known for his successful tenure as the host of The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015, returned to the show this month as the executive producer and host of Monday night’s episodes. His love for animals extends beyond Dipper, as he and his wife Tracey have created a sanctuary for abused animals on their 45-acre farm.

Losing a beloved dog is always heart-wrenching, and our thoughts go out to Jon Stewart and his family during this difficult time. We thank them for rescuing Dipper and providing him with a loving home for all those years. Rest in peace, Dipper.
