In 1997, the world witnessed a truly extraordinary event – the birth of the world’s first surviving septuplets. Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey from Iowa, U.S., became the proud parents of these seven special babies, who arrived into the world nine weeks prematurely. Their incredible story captured the attention of people worldwide, leading to countless interviews and media coverage.
The septuplets became instant celebrities, even celebrating their first birthday on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Each of them received their own birthday cake and had the honor of meeting former president Bill Clinton. The McCaughey family, who already had a daughter, suddenly found themselves with a very busy household.
According to Obsev.com, caring for the septuplets was certainly no easy task. They required an astonishing average of 52 diapers and 42 bottles of milk every single day. However, the McCaugheys received an outpouring of support from the community. Donations poured in, including a spacious home, a van, and even a year’s supply of Kraft macaroni and cheese. The babies also received diapers for the first two years and full college scholarships to any state university in Iowa.
While their parents appreciated the generosity, they continued to work hard to reduce the expenses of raising eight children. They even started growing their own vegetables to sustain their growing family. Despite the challenges, the septuplets thrived.
Two of the septuplets, Alexis and Nathan, were diagnosed with cerebral palsy and required the use of walkers. However, through determination and resilience, Nathan underwent back surgery in 2005, which greatly improved his walking abilities. He has since taught himself how to get around without a walker.
All seven septuplets successfully graduated from high school and embarked on their individual journeys. Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, and Joel took advantage of private scholarships to attend Hannibal-LaGrange University in Missouri. Meanwhile, Kenny and Alexis chose to stay closer to home and enrolled in Des Moines Area Community College. Brandon, on the other hand, decided to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army.
Attending college was an eye-opening experience for the siblings, as it provided them with their first taste of independence. Kelsey, who majored in public relations, expressed how going away to college allowed each of them to develop their unique talents and pursue their desired professions. They were no longer just the seven septuplets; they were becoming their own individuals.
Throughout the years, the siblings have continued to grow and evolve. Older sister Mikayla got married in 2015, and the septuplets experienced the joy of becoming aunts and uncles for the first time with the birth of her son. Natalie was the first to tie the knot in May 2019, followed by Brandon four months later.
Looking ahead, Natalie expresses her desire to attend graduate school, where she hopes to become an athletic trainer. Alexis, who studied early childhood education, aspires to work in an elementary school, and she has even won several beauty pageants for children with special needs. Nathan and Joel share a passion for computer-related fields, with Nathan majoring in computer information systems and Joel aspiring to work for Google in the cyber security division.
Together, these septuplets are not only siblings but also best friends. As Natalie beautifully said, “Having six siblings, we’re not only the same age, but we’re all best friends.” Their bond is indescribable, and they are grateful for the incredible friendship they share.
