Heartbreaking news has emerged as the body of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham has been found in the Trinity River in Livingston, Pole County. The devastating update comes after Audrii failed to show up for school on February 15 and a widespread search was initiated.
The Polk County Sheriff, Byron Lyons, confirmed the discovery of Audrii’s body during a press conference, stating that evidence is still being processed. “We will continue to process the evidence that has been gathered to ensure that there is justice for Audrii,” Sheriff Lyons said.
Earlier this week, a backpack resembling that of a child’s was found near Lake Livingston Dam. Audrii’s mother, Cassie Matthews, expressed her despair, saying, “This is the stuff you see on TV where you can only imagine what the families and the parents are going through. Right now, I am empty.”
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Ranger Division, Department of Public Safety, Livingston Police Department, Texas State Guard, and local fire departments, launched a search operation, which tragically ended with the discovery of Audrii’s body.
A 42-year-old man named Don Steven McDougal, who lived close to Audrii’s family home, is now under investigation. McDougal was arrested on unrelated charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities believe that McDougal was the last person to see Audrii and are preparing arrest warrants. According to sources, McDougal resides in a camper behind Audrii’s residence where she lived with her father, grandparents, and other family members.
The Polk County District Attorney, Shelly Sitton, has indicated that the person responsible for Audrii’s disappearance may face capital murder charges.
Our hearts go out to Audrii’s loved ones during this devastating time. Rest in peace, sweet girl.
