Grief is a complex journey that we all experience in our own way. It takes time to process and cope with the loss of a loved one, and sometimes we never fully recover from the void they leave behind. Renowned singer Rod Stewart knows this all too well, having recently announced the passing of his brother Bob, just a few months after the death of another brother, Don.
Rod Stewart shared the sad news on Instagram on November 30 of last year, revealing that Bob had passed away the previous evening. In a heartfelt tribute, Rod expressed his desire for Bob and Don, who died within months of each other, to be playing football together in the afterlife.
Losing two of his closest friends in such a short span of time has left the iconic British rock and pop artist devastated. He mourned their loss with the following statement: “It’s with great sadness that I announce the loss of my brother Bob last night, who joins my brother Don on the great football pitch in the sky. I’ve lost two of my best mates in the space of two months. RIP Don and Bob, ‘irreplaceable buddies,’ Sir Rod Stewart.”
Rod’s older brother Don passed away in September 2022 at the age of 94, just a few months before Bob’s passing. Rod honored his brother’s memory by posting a similar tribute on social media, featuring a picture of a crown against a dark background.
During a celebration of his sister Mary Cady’s 90th birthday in January 2019, Rod acknowledged the vital role Don and Mary played in his journey to success. He emphasized their support and guidance, stating, “These individuals were crucial in supporting me, helping me get into music, and just being there for me.”
Growing up, Rod had four siblings, but now, with Bob’s passing, only Mary remains. In his autobiography, “Rod: The Autobiography,” Rod shared his life story and expressed his deep appreciation for his sister and brothers, describing them as “brilliant.”
At the age of 78, Rod Stewart continues to pursue his passion for music and will soon be performing in Florida. However, given his close relationship with his brothers and the impact of their loss, he expects the year 2023 to be challenging.
Reflecting on his own health struggles, Rod Stewart has faced multiple battles, including thyroid cancer in 2000, which nearly robbed him of the voice that made him a global star. Recalling the shock of the diagnosis, Rod remarked, “I mean, I just went into total silence for a few days.”
Fortunately, he underwent successful surgery and was spared the need for chemotherapy, preserving his iconic voice. In his autobiography, Rod humorously noted, “And let’s face it: if we’re ranking threats to the survival of my career, losing my hair would be second only to losing my voice.”
In a surprising revelation in 2019, Rod Stewart disclosed that he had been secretly battling prostate cancer since February 2016. Speaking at a fundraising event for the Prostate Project and European Tour Foundation, he encouraged others to prioritize their health and get tested, sharing his own experience of catching the disease early.
Thankfully, reports suggest that the singer received a clean bill of health in the same year. Urging men to undergo regular check-ups, Rod Stewart famously quipped, “Guys, you’ve got to really go to the doctor. Finger up the bum, no harm done.”
