Meet William Kyle, an extraordinary American hero whose remarkable story deserves to be known. At just 21 years old, Kyle joined the ranks of the US Marine Corps, where he quickly rose to the rank of Lance Corporal. In 2010, he was deployed to Afghanistan, ready to serve his country with unwavering dedication.
During a fierce combat encounter, fate took a terrifying turn. A grenade landed near Kyle and his fellow Marine, putting their lives in immediate danger. Without a moment’s hesitation, Kyle made a split-second decision that showcased his indomitable strength and courage. He jumped on the grenade, using his own body as a shield to protect his comrade.
This selfless act of heroism saved the life of his fellow Marine but forever changed Kyle’s own life. The explosion left him with devastating injuries – shrapnel pierced his body, bones in his skull and face were shattered, and he lost part of his jaw. His lung collapsed, and the initial medical report upon his return to Camp Bastion tragically declared “patient expired on arrival.”
Against all odds, Kyle survived and embarked on a grueling two-year journey of recovery. He endured forty surgeries, each one a stepping stone on his path to rebuilding his shattered body and reclaiming his life. In recognition of his immense bravery, Kyle was awarded the Purple Heart and the prestigious Medal of Honor by the esteemed President Barack Obama.
Today, Kyle has retired from military service and is focused on a new chapter in his life. He is pursuing a degree at the esteemed University of South Carolina, never one to shy away from new challenges.
