It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Amos, the beloved actor known for his role in the hit sitcom “Good Times”. He passed away on August 21 in Los Angeles at the age of 84.
In a statement, his son, film producer Kelly Christopher “K.C.” Amos, shared the news of his father’s transition. K.C. described him as a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold, who was loved by fans around the world. Many fans considered him their TV father.
John Amos lived a fulfilling life, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in television and film. Born in Newark on December 27, 1939, he attended East Orange High School and graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in sociology.
Prior to his acting career, Amos was a talented football player. Although his professional football dreams were cut short due to injury, he found success in the entertainment industry.
Amos made his acting debut in 1970 with a role in an episode of “The Bill Cosby Show”. That same year, he landed a recurring role as the weatherman Gordon “Gordy” Howard in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. However, it was his portrayal of James Evans, Sr. in “Good Times” that solidified his place in television history.
Created by Eric Monte and Mike Evans, and developed by Norman Lear, “Good Times” focused on an African American family living in Chicago. Amos’ character was a loving husband and father, and his performance resonated with viewers.
Despite his success on the show, Amos was only on “Good Times” for the first three seasons. His character was tragically killed off in a car accident. Reportedly, he was fired from the show due to his concerns about the negative portrayal of African Americans in the scripts.
Amos continued his career with notable appearances in “Roots”, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, and “Die Hard 2”, among others. He was a versatile actor who brought depth and authenticity to his roles.
Outside of his acting career, Amos was a family man. He had two children with his first wife, Noel Mickelson, and was later married to actress Lillian Lehman. Unfortunately, his family life was not without its challenges. There were public allegations of elder abuse between Amos and his daughter Shannon, but despite the difficulties, John Amos emphasized that they were still family and loved each other.
Despite his passing, John Amos’ impact on the entertainment industry will be remembered forever. He recently worked on a documentary about his life, which is eagerly awaited by fans and admirers.
John Amos may be no longer with us, but his talent, warmth, and contributions to television and film will continue to inspire and entertain generations to come.
