When I got home early that evening, my husband, Greg, was waiting by the door, grinning unusually brightly. “Long day?” he asked, kissing my cheek.
I nodded, dropping my bag. “Exhausting. Meetings all day.”
“Perfect,” he said with a boyish grin. “Why don’t you sit down? I’ll give you a foot massage.”
Greg wasn’t exactly known for spontaneous affection โ he’d groan just passing the remote. His sudden transformation raised a red flag, but I shrugged it off, too tired to care.
I sank onto the couch, letting him slip off my shoes. His hands worked with surprising skill. My suspicions flickered. “What’s gotten into you? You’re never thisโฆ thoughtful.”
He laughed too loud. “CAN’T A HUSBAND PAMPER HIS WIFE WITHOUT IT BEING SUSPICIOUS?”
I forced a smile, but something felt off. Then, I heard it. It was a faint click, like the bathroom door shutting.
“Did you hear that?” I asked, sitting up.
“Hear what?” His hands froze before resuming.
“The bathroom door…”
“Oh! Probably the pipes. This old house, you know,” he stammered.
My chest tightened. I stood, brushing his hands away. “Greg, what’s going on?”
“Nothing! You’re just tired. Sit downโฆ”
Ignoring him, I headed for the bathroom. His panicked voice rose behind me. “WAIT! WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!”
I flung the bathroom door open.
At first, I didnโt see anything unusual. The shower curtain was drawn, and the sink was dry. But then, a faint rustling noise came from behind the curtain.
My breath caught. I reached out and yanked it open in one swift motion.
And there, crouched inside the bathtub, was my sister.
My mind reeled. “Rachel?! What the hell are you doing here?”
She blinked up at me, her face flushed. “IโI can explain!”
Behind me, Greg groaned. “Oh, for the love ofโRachel, you were supposed to stay quiet!”
I spun to him, anger rising in my throat. “She was supposed to stay quiet? Greg, what is going on?!”
Rachel clambered out of the tub, straightening her skirt. “Okay, okay. Donโt freak out. Itโs not what it looks like.”
“Oh, really? Because it looks like my husband is hiding my sister in our bathroom!”
Greg sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Rachel lost her apartment lease. She was supposed to crash with us for a few days while she figured things out. I planned to tell you, but I knew youโd be stressed from work, and Iโฆ I didnโt want you to freak out.”
I stared at him, then at Rachel, my pulse hammering. “So instead of just telling me, you decided to hide her in the bathroom like a fugitive?”
Rachel winced. “In my defense, Greg told me you wouldnโt be home until late.”
“Oh, that makes it so much better.”
Greg held up his hands. “Look, I know I screwed up. I just wanted to break it to you at the right time. And I figured if I buttered you up first, maybe youโd be less mad.”
I rubbed my temples. “Greg, this is insane. And Rachel, why didnโt you just call me?”
She bit her lip. “Because I knew youโd say yes, but I also knew youโd want to set rules and have a long talk about it, and I justโฆ I just needed a place to crash without dealing with everything right away.”
I exhaled sharply. This was ridiculous. But also, in a way, it wasโฆ kind of them? Misguided, absolutely. But their hearts were in the right placeโwell, mostly.
Greg looked at me sheepishly. “Soโฆ still mad?”
I crossed my arms. “Oh, youโre both going to make it up to me. Greg, youโre doing dishes for a week. Rachel, youโre on laundry duty.”
Rachel nodded eagerly. “Deal.”
Greg groaned but nodded. “Fair.”
I shook my head, finally allowing myself to chuckle. “You two are unbelievable. Next time, just talk to me.”
As frustrated as I was, I realized something important: communication, no matter how awkward, is always better than sneaking around. Because trust, once cracked, is hard to glue back together.
