Over the years, we’ve been blessed with countless musicians who have touched our hearts with their incredible talents. Some of these artists remain iconic even decades later, with their music still holding a special place in our hearts.
One such musician who left an indelible mark on the world is John Lennon. Known for his influential songs and his time with the Beatles, John Lennon gifted us with many memorable tunes. However, his song ‘Imagine’ stands out as one that resonates profoundly with many of us.
Tragically, John Lennon’s life was cut short, but he left a lasting legacy in his son, Julian. Interestingly, Julian once declared that he would never perform ‘Imagine,’ feeling that its poignant message was one reserved for a moment of global crisis.
At 59 years old, Julian decided that the moment had come for him to perform the song publicly for the first time. He chose to do so during the 2022 Global Citizen’s Stand Up for Ukraine campaign, a movement dedicated to aiding those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.
Julian expressed his deep sorrow for the ‘unimaginable tragedy’ in Ukraine and felt compelled to respond in the most meaningful way he could.
“The song reflects the light at the end of the tunnel, that we are all hoping for…” he wrote. “As a result of the ongoing murderous violence, millions of innocent families have been forced to leave the comfort of their homes to seek asylum elsewhere.”
Since late February, more than 4.5 million people have fled Ukraine, becoming refugees. During the global fundraiser where Julian sang the timeless song, over $10 billion was pledged to support these refugees.
Julian, the son of John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia Lennon, urges us not to limit our compassion to Ukrainian refugees alone. He advocates for help for anyone seeking a better life.
