It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Charles Cyphers, a beloved figure in the world of horror movies. Charles, who portrayed a terrifying movie star on the big screen, succumbed to illness at the age of 85. His manager, Chris Roe, confirmed the news, sharing that Charles had been unwell for a brief period.
Charles left a lasting impression on audiences with his memorable performances. One of his most iconic roles was that of Sheriff Leigh Brackett in the 1978 Halloween movie. He reprised the character in sequels released in 1981 and 2021. Reflecting on his return for Halloween Kills, the third movie in the series, Charles expressed his gratitude, stating, “It was shocking but wonderful to be asked back after 40 years. Most of the people are dead, so thank goodness I didn’t die, because they brought me back.” His enthusiasm to portray Sheriff Brackett once again was palpable, and he appreciated the opportunity to be part of the franchise that had made such an impact on his career.
Beyond the Halloween movies, Charles undertook an array of diverse roles throughout his acting journey. He collaborated with Halloween director John Carpenter on multiple occasions, such as in Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) and The Fog (1981), which also featured the talented Jamie Lee Curtis. Charles’s talent extended beyond the silver screen, as he led various television shows, including The Dukes of Hazzard, The Betty White Show, Seinfeld, JAG, Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher, and many more.
Charles Cyphers was not only an accomplished actor but also a remarkable individual. He was known to be kind, loving, and a master storyteller. Chris Roe, who was both his manager and close friend, remarked, “Charles was a kind and loving man. He always told the best stories, and you were thrilled as he did them.” His warm and friendly demeanor made him a cherished presence on and off the screen.
Born on July 28, 1939, in Niagara Falls, New York, Charles pursued a passion for theater arts. He obtained degrees from both California State University, Los Angeles, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Charles’s dedication to his craft was evident as he obtained a bachelor’s degree in theater arts and honed his skills at Los Angeles City College.
While Charles’s professional achievements were numerous, it is his roles in the Halloween movies that have left an indelible mark on cinema history. Generations of horror fans have experienced the suspense and terror he evoked through his performances.
