A member of the San Francisco 49ers is grieving the loss of their 23-month-old daughter. Charvarius Ward, a cornerback for the 49ers, shared the heartbreaking news on Tuesday, October 29. His daughter, Amani Joy, passed away, just weeks shy of her second birthday.
In an emotional Instagram post, Ward expressed his sadness: “We are heartbroken that our beautiful baby girl, Amani Joy, passed away on Monday morning. She was the best blessing we could have asked for, and her joyous spirit made us smile from ear to ear.”
Ward continued to share the impact his daughter made on their lives: “She taught us to have patience, trust, and a positive outlook on life. She showed us true strength and bravery. She overcame adversity at a young age and was always happy, lighting up every room with her smile.”
Amani was diagnosed with Down syndrome and a heart defect during pregnancy. She was born premature and underwent heart surgery at just six months old. Despite the challenges she faced, Amani brought so much joy and love to her family.
Earlier this year, Ward celebrated World Down Syndrome Day with a heartfelt tribute to his daughter. He wrote on Instagram, “Amani Joy Ward has been the best blessing I could’ve asked for. I used to think Down Syndrome was a handicap, but now I realize it is just a gift from God. Being Amani’s dad has taught me patience and how to surrender and let things be.”
The San Francisco 49ers also expressed their support for Ward and his family, sharing a statement: “The 49ers family is devastated by the sudden passing of Charvarius Ward’s beloved one-year-old daughter, Amani Joy. Amani truly embodied pure happiness and brought joy to all those around her with her sweet demeanor and contagious laugh.”
This tragic loss reminds us of the preciousness of life and the strength of families facing adversity. Our hearts and thoughts go out to Ward, his girlfriend Monique Cook, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.
