In a tragic turn of events, the world mourns the loss of both ballerina Michaela DePrince and her beloved mother, Elaine DePrince. Just one day after the untimely death of her daughter, Elaine passed away at the age of 77. The news has left the family and their supporters devastated.
Elaine had been battling a hereditary disease and heart failure for many years. She was unaware of her daughter’s passing when she underwent a routine procedure. The family wants to dispel any rumors surrounding their deaths and clarify that the two events were entirely unrelated.
As Jessica Volinski, the spokesperson for the DePrince family, shared in a Facebook post, “The only way we can make sense of the senseless is that Elaine, who had already lost three children many years ago, was, by the grace of God, spared the pain of experiencing the loss of a fourth child.”
Grieving the loss of two family members within a 24-hour period is beyond comprehension. The family requests privacy during this unimaginably painful time. They also ask that anyone who comes across misinformation or speculation directs them to the official statement.
Elaine DePrince was a remarkable woman in her own right. She described herself as a former teacher, an author, a lyricist, and a mother of eleven. Elaine wrote a book titled “Cry Bloody Murder,” which delves into the topics of hemophilia and HIV. She also co-authored another book titled “Taking Flight.”
Michaela DePrince’s journey from being an orphan in Sierra Leone to becoming an internationally renowned ballerina is nothing short of inspiring. Adopted by Elaine and welcomed into her family, Michaela found love and support that she had never experienced before. She soon discovered her passion for dance and embarked on a career that would leave an indelible mark in the world of ballet.
Throughout her life, Michaela achieved great success. She danced as a ballerina at the Dutch National Ballet and later became a principal soloist at the Boston Ballet. Her talent was captured in the 2011 documentary “First Position” and showcased in the 2021 movie “Coppelia.” Michaela even graced the stage of “Dancing With the Stars” during AT&T’s 2012 spotlight performance and made an appearance in Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” film.
Beyoncé herself paid tribute to Michaela, saying, “Rest in peace Michaela Mabinty DePrince. Your courageous journey and beautiful dance as one of the world’s best ballerinas will stay with us always.”
Though Michaela’s time with us was tragically short, her impact will be felt for generations. Her artistry, resilience, and humanitarian efforts inspired many. She proved that greatness can emerge from even the darkest of circumstances.
As we grieve the loss of Michaela and Elaine, our love and prayers go out to their chosen family, friends, and all those who loved them. May their spirits live on and their story continue to touch hearts across the world.
