FBI Investigates Attempted Assassination of Former President Donald Trump

The FBI is currently investigating the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The suspect, Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old, allegedly shot at Trump with an AR-15 but missed his target and instead injured three other individuals, one of whom tragically died.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and the investigation is still in its early stages. FBI agents have entered Crooks’ home in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, searching for more clues and evidence. The agency has also conducted numerous interviews with law enforcement personnel, event attendees, and witnesses, as they strive to identify the motive and any potential associates involved in the incident.

Despite the shock and concern surrounding the assassination attempt, Trump has broken his silence, stating, “I’m not supposed to be here.” The former president’s supporters at the rally were taken by surprise and had to seek cover when the gunfire erupted.

The FBI is treating Crooks’ actions as domestic terrorism and has dedicated all available resources to determine the motive behind the attack. Robert Wells, the assistant director of the Counterterrorism Division at the FBI, stated that their primary goal is to uncover any other potential associates or individuals involved in the incident.

During the shooting, Crooks was perched on the rooftop of a building approximately 160 yards away from Trump. He fatally shot Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief, and injured two others. In response, Secret Service agents returned fire, killing Crooks.

The investigation has revealed that Crooks had explosives in his car, which was parked near the rally, and bomb-making materials in his home. These discoveries raise additional concerns about the potential scope and planning of the attack.

Crooks was a member of the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club in nearby Clairton and had graduated from Bethel Park High School. He had also received a “star award” from the National Math and Science Initiative. While he was a registered Republican, he donated $15 to a Democratic political action committee based in Chicago in 2021.

The FBI is urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist in their investigation. Tips can be submitted to FBI.gov/butler or by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI.
