What Does It Mean When You Dream of Someone Who Has Passed Away?

Off The Record

Losing a loved one is a painful experience that we all go through at some point in our lives. It’s natural to grieve and feel the impact of their absence. But have you ever had a dream about someone who is no longer living? Have you thought about what it could mean?

People grieve in different ways. Some cry their hearts out, while others withdraw inwardly. Some may even try to avoid thinking about it. However, many find solace in remembering their departed loved ones through dreams.

Our dreams are influenced by our subconscious mind, and if you’ve ever dreamt about a deceased person, it could be seen as a form of communication.

According to Patrick McNamara, an associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at Boston University School, these dreams are known as visitation dreams. It’s when the deceased appear in our dreams, looking very much alive.

McNamara, who writes about dreams under the name Dream Catcher, believes that these dreams serve as a way to heal from emotional trauma. He even shares a personal experience of dreaming about his deceased parents and feeling a strong connection with them.

Various studies have been conducted to understand more about these types of dreams. One study published in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care in 2014 concluded that dreams of the deceased are frequent, meaningful, and can aid in the healing process after a loss.

These dreams often involve past memories or experiences, the deceased appearing healthy and at peace, and sometimes even communicating a message.

Another study by Canadian researchers in 2016 found that dreaming about a departed loved one strengthened faith in an afterlife for 67.1% of participants. It also created a sense of connection with the departed.

Psychologist Jennifer E. Shorter, who has studied the connection between waking life and dreams, states that visitation dreams can occur shortly after the person’s death or many years later. She outlines four key characteristics of these dreams:

  1. The deceased appear as they did in real life, but healthier or younger.
  2. They often communicate that they are fine or in a better place.
  3. The dream feels like a telepathic connection rather than a physical presence.
  4. The dream is peaceful and well-structured, creating a sense of harmony.

Dreams have a significant impact on our emotions and thoughts. Have you ever had a dream about someone who has passed away? If so, what significance did it hold for you?
