Starting from a young age, Cameron became entangled in a destructive cycle of alcohol and drug abuse. Despite having access to everything he could desire, he turned to excessive substance use, pushing his life to the edge. His choices escalated to a point where Michael feared he would lose his son to an overdose.

Cameron’s experimentation with alcohol and pot quickly escalated to even more dangerous substances, such as cocaine, heroin, and crystal meth. As his addiction consumed him, he spiraled out of control, associating with a dangerous crowd and even resorting to carrying guns.

Now, at the age of 40, Cameron has finally left behind his drug-fueled life and started anew. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, he opened up about the self-hatred he felt as an addict, desperately wanting to break free from the cycle but finding himself unable to do so.

While Cameron’s parents, Michael Douglas and Diandra, did everything they could to support him, no rehabilitation program or amount of money could pull him out of the depths of addiction. It was a painful experience for them to witness their son’s potential being destroyed by drugs.

Michael Douglas himself admitted, “There were moments when hope dwindled… and then it’s just a train out of the station. Life became a series of crises. I thought I was going to lose him.”

Cameron’s struggle with addiction reached its peak in 2010 when he was sentenced to five years in prison for a federal drug charge involving heroin possession. Thanks to his father’s influence, his sentence was reduced, saving him from a much longer incarceration. However, even behind bars, Cameron faced additional challenges as he was caught smuggling drugs into prison, leading to an extended sentence.

After finally being released in 2016, Cameron has turned his life around and is now free from the grips of addiction. He cherishes the precious time he spends with his aging father and is grateful for their closer bond. Cameron is now committed to being a loving father to his toddler daughter, as well as pursuing his acting career and helping others on their journey to recovery.

Cameron concludes, “In difficult times, we tend to come closer. It is a beautiful sort of trait that we have. My father and I have an amazing relationship. I love spending time with him, and I will spend as much time with him as I can.”

With his past behind him, Cameron Douglas is now focused on building a brighter future, not only for himself and his family but also for those struggling with addiction who need inspiration and support to reclaim their lives.
