Tragedy Strikes: Two Lives Lost in Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Two feared dead, six construction workers buried after Baltimore bridge collapse

In the early hours of March 26, a heart-wrenching incident occurred on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland. Miguel Luna, 49, and Maynor Suazo, 37, were working the graveyard shift when a cargo ship collided with one of the bridge’s support beams. The impact caused the bridge to crumble, tragically throwing six workers into the Patapsco River.

Miguel Luna, a proud member of the construction crew, had shared countless photos of his work on the iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge over the years. He cherished the opportunity to provide for his wife and three children through his dedication to his craft. However, since that fateful day, Luna’s loved ones, like five other families, have been anxiously waiting for any glimmer of hope.

The devastated wife of Miguel Luna, Maria del Carmen Castellón, expressed the pain and uncertainty they feel: “We’re devastated, our hearts are broken. We don’t know if they’ve been rescued. We’re eagerly waiting for any news.”

Maynor Suazo, a dedicated worker and father of two, also met a tragic fate in the bridge collapse. Hailing from Azacualpa, Santa Barbara, Suazo had been living in the United States for 18 years. His brother, Martin, shared that Maynor had immigrated to the United States for a better life. Martin plans to travel to the States to repatriate his brother’s remains. Maynor Suazo leaves behind an 18-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter.

Friends and family remember Maynor Suazo as a warm-hearted individual, an entrepreneur, and a person dedicated to serving the community. They express their deepest prayers and longing to see him again, to enjoy his joy and enthusiasm.

The crew, considered heroes, had been working on the Francis Scott Key Bridge to repair potholes. The bridge, named after the writer of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Francis Scott Key, has stood since 1977. The collision with the cargo ship caused the bridge’s collapse, throwing the eight men into the dark, frigid waters below.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore commended the crew’s courageous efforts to prevent cars from crossing the bridge, saving lives in the process. He reassured the public that the bridge had met safety standards and had no known structural issues.

While two workers were rescued, six remain missing. Their names have not been released yet. The search and recovery mission continues as authorities tirelessly work to bring closure to the grieving families.

Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, and we honor the bravery of the workers who risked their lives. Let us stand together to support these families during this difficult time.
