I RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER MY HUSBAND’S SERIOUS ACCIDENT – ONLY TO FIND HIS “OTHER WIFE” AT THE RECEPTION ASKING TO VISIT HIM
I was washing dishes when the call came — an unknown number. A serious voice quickly turned my world upside down:
“Donna? This is St. Mary’s Hospital. Your husband has been in a serious car accident.”
In shock, I sped to the hospital. I thought I was rushing to support the man I loved, but when I reached the reception, I froze.
A young blonde woman, just as panicked as I was, was speaking to the receptionist. “I’m here to see my husband, Brian,” she stated.
Wait, her husband?
I stared at her, heart sinking. “I’m Brian’s wife. Who are you?”
The confusion on her face mirrored mine. We were both married to Brian. We were both his wife.
Stephanie, as I later learned, shook her head, whispering, “Oh my God.”
And we instantly knew Brian was about to have the worst wake-up call of his life.
Stephanie turned to the receptionist.
“Can we both go up?”
The nurse at the desk hesitated, eyes darting between us. She clearly wasn’t sure how to handle two women claiming to be married to the same man. After an awkward moment, she gave a small nod.
“He’s in Room 302. But please… try to stay calm.”
Neither of us spoke as we walked toward the elevator. My hands trembled, my mind racing with a thousand questions. Who was this woman? How long had Brian been living this double life?
Stephanie, gripping her purse tightly, glanced at me. “How long have you two been married?” she asked, her voice unsteady.
“Seven years,” I replied, swallowing hard.
Her eyes widened. “Seven? We’ve been married for three.”
I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. This wasn’t some casual affair. This was a second, full-fledged marriage.
The elevator doors opened, and we stepped into the dimly lit hallway. My legs felt like jelly as we reached Brian’s room. The sound of the heart monitor beeping filled the silence.
He was lying in bed, unconscious, with bandages wrapped around his head. The sight of him – vulnerable, motionless – made my heart twist, despite everything.
Stephanie and I stood on opposite sides of the bed.
“How the hell did we end up here?” she muttered.
I had no answer.
A nurse walked in, glancing between us. “Are you his…?” she trailed off, clearly unsure what to say.
“Wives,” I said flatly.
The nurse blinked. “Oh.” She cleared her throat. “Well, uh, he’s stable now. He regained consciousness briefly earlier but was disoriented. He might wake up soon.”
Stephanie and I exchanged a glance. I could tell we were both thinking the same thing: What would he say when he woke up?
We didn’t have to wait long.
A groggy groan escaped Brian’s lips, and his fingers twitched. His eyelids fluttered open. He turned his head slightly, looking first at me… then at Stephanie.
Confusion spread across his face. His eyes darted back and forth.
“Wh—?” His voice was raspy. “What… What’s happening?”
Stephanie crossed her arms. “That’s what we’d like to know, Brian.”
His breathing quickened. “Steph… Donna… What…?”
“Yeah,” I snapped. “We know. You married both of us. Care to explain?”
His face drained of color. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.
“Nothing to say?” Stephanie scoffed. “Funny, considering you managed to live two whole lives without either of us knowing.”
Brian swallowed hard. He glanced at the nurse, as if hoping she’d rescue him. But she simply adjusted his IV drip and muttered, “I’ll give you some privacy,” before slipping out.
Stephanie leaned in, voice trembling with anger. “How long, Brian? How long were you planning to keep this up?”
He closed his eyes. “I… I never wanted this to happen…”
I let out a bitter laugh. “Oh, please. You didn’t just ‘accidentally’ marry two women.”
He rubbed his temples, wincing. “It wasn’t like that. I loved you both. I just… I didn’t know how to choose.”
“So you decided to have us both?” Stephanie’s voice cracked.
Brian exhaled heavily. “I met you, Steph, when work started sending me to Chicago more often. I didn’t plan to fall for you. But I did. And I couldn’t let go of Donna, either. I told myself I’d figure it out… someday.”
“Someday?” I repeated, my voice sharp. “You strung us both along for years, Brian.”
Stephanie’s face darkened. “And where does she fit into all this?”
I frowned. “What?”
She pointed at the bedside table. Sitting on top of it was a phone. The screen had just lit up with a notification. One Missed Call – Rachel.
Brian visibly tensed.
Stephanie snatched the phone before he could react. She quickly swiped to his recent calls. Her face turned pale. “Who the hell is Rachel?”
My stomach dropped.
I grabbed the phone from her and scrolled through the messages. My hands shook as I read them.
“Can’t wait to see you tonight, baby.”
“Missing you. When will she be out of town again?”
I turned the phone toward Brian, my jaw clenched. “Rachel? Another one?”
His silence told me everything I needed to know.
Stephanie let out a bitter laugh. “So, not just two wives. You had a side piece, too?”
Brian looked completely trapped. “It’s not what it looks like.”
“Really?” I snapped. “Because it looks like you were cheating on both of your wives with your boss’s wife.”
Stephanie gasped. “Wait. His boss’s wife?“
I nodded grimly. “Rachel Thompson. Married to David Thompson. As in, Brian’s boss.”
Brian’s face turned ghostly white.
Stephanie shook her head in disgust. “Unbelievable. Just… unbelievable.”
At that moment, a knock on the door made us all freeze.
The door swung open, and in walked David Thompson. His tall frame filled the doorway, and his sharp gaze locked onto Brian.
“Well,” David said coolly. “Imagine my surprise when I find out my wife has been visiting a hospital patient. And imagine my greater surprise when I realize that patient is you.”
Brian opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
David folded his arms. “I fired you this morning, Brian. Thought you should know.”
Brian visibly deflated.
David glanced at me and Stephanie. “Ladies, I don’t know what you plan to do, but I’d say you both deserve better.”
Stephanie straightened. “Oh, we’re leaving him.”
I met Brian’s eyes, feeling nothing but exhaustion. “Yeah. We’re done.”
Brian let out a weak, pleading “Wait—” but we were already walking out.
Stephanie and I didn’t speak at first. But once we stepped outside, she let out a long breath.
“So… drinks?” she asked.
I glanced at her, then nodded. “Drinks.”
As we walked away, I realized something: This wasn’t just the worst day of my life. It was also the start of something better.
