I could hardly believe what I was seeing. My heart pounded in my chest as I pulled up to the house I had lived in my entire lifeโthe house my father had built with his own hands. And there, scattered across the front lawn like garbage, were my belongings.
The shock made me dizzy. My old armchair, the one my dad used to sit in when he read to me as a child, was lying on its side. Boxes filled with clothes, books, and personal items were piled haphazardly near the curb. A couple of photo frames had shattered, their glass reflecting the afternoon sun.
And there she wasโmy daughter-in-law, Lisa, lounging on the porch, casually sipping coffee as if she hadnโt just upended my entire life.
I stormed out of my car, slamming the door shut so hard it echoed down the street.
โWhat the hell is this?!โ I shouted, pointing at my things.
Lisa smirked, her eyes glinting with something almost victorious. โOh, youโre back,โ she said, setting down her cup. โI thought youโd be gone a little longer.โ
โGone? What are you even talking about?โ
She crossed her arms and sighed dramatically, as if she were the victim in all of this. โYour fatherโs will arrived this morning. Turns out, he left the house to me. So I thought Iโd save you the trouble of packing and justโฆ help you move along.โ
I stared at her, waiting for her to laugh, to tell me this was some cruel joke. But the smug look on her face told me she was dead serious.
โYou threw my things out based on something you just received this morning?โ I demanded.
โYes, I have a copy of the will. It was all made official,โ she said mockingly.
My hands clenched into fists. My father had been in a nursing home for the last year of his life. There was no way he wouldโve left the house to Lisa. He barely even tolerated her.
Just as I was about to call my fatherโs lawyer, another car pulled up. My son, Daniel, stepped out, his face twisted in confusion as he took in the mess in the yard.
โWhatโs going on?โ he asked, walking toward us.
Lisa didnโt miss a beat. โOh, perfect timing! I was just about to tell youโI want a divorce.โ
Silence.
Daniel blinked, as if his brain had short-circuited. โWaitโฆ what?โ
โI want a divorce,โ Lisa repeated, her tone almost bored. โI was just waiting for the will to be settled before making it official.โ
I could see the moment my son registered what she was saying. His jaw tensed. โSoโฆ let me get this straight. You just inherited my familyโs house, and now youโre leaving me?โ
Lisa shrugged, completely unapologetic. โPretty much.โ
Something inside me snapped. I pulled out my phone and dialed the number I had memorized long ago. The second my fatherโs lawyer answered, I put him on speaker.
โHey, Mr. Lawson,โ I said, my voice shaking with barely contained rage. โLisa here is claiming my father left my house to her in his will. Can you confirm that?โ
There was a pause, then four simple words that made me burst into laughter.
โShe fell for it.โ
Lisaโs smug expression vanished. โW-what?โ
โYour father had a feeling something was off, so he made a fake will to be sent to you DIL,โ Mr. Lawson continued. โYour father never trusted her. He was sure she didn’t love Daniel. He left everything to you, not Lisa.โ
I wheeled around to face her. โLooks like youโre the one who needs to pack your bags.โ
Lisaโs mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for air. โThatโs not possible. IโI have a copy of the will!โ
Mr. Lawson sighed. โYou must have a copy of a fake, because the one filed with the courts names only one heirโhis daughter.โ
Lisa turned to Daniel, desperation seeping into her voice. โYou have to fight this! Demand your share!โ
Daniel, to my surprise, shook his head. โYou really donโt get it, do you?โ He gestured at the yard, the boxes, the mess. โYou threw my motherโs things onto the street. You planned to take everything and then leave me with nothing. Why would I fight for you?โ
Lisaโs face crumpled. โButโโ
Daniel took a step back, his eyes steely. โYou need to leave, Lisa. Right now.โ
For the first time, she was the one being thrown out. The irony wasnโt lost on me.
Lisa scrambled to grab her purse and stormed off, but not before throwing one last glare in my direction. I just smiled and waved as she climbed into her car and sped off.
I turned to Daniel, expecting some sort of apology, but instead, he looked utterly defeated.
โI really thought she loved me,โ he murmured, running a hand through his hair.
I softened. No matter how angry I had been at Lisa, my son had been blindsided just as much as I had. โI know, sweetheart.โ
He exhaled, staring at the now-empty porch. โGuess Iโll have to figure out my next steps.โ
โYouโll always have a home here,โ I said gently.
His eyes met mine, gratitude flickering behind them. โThanks, Mom.โ
Later that evening, as I sat in my familiar old armchairโnow safely back inside where it belongedโI thought about how quickly karma had worked its magic.
Lisa had tried to steal my home and my sonโs future. In the end, she had nothing.
And as for me? I had everything that mattered.
Sometimes, life has a way of setting things right.
