A father of three from Brighton, UK, is turning heads with his unconventional lifestyle, relying on benefits while openly stating that working full-time isn’t on his agenda. He insists he’s not taking advantage of the system.
Meet Matt Allen, a committed dad and part-time yoga instructor, who simply isn’t interested in the traditional nine-to-five grind. Despite residing with his family in a council house, he believes his minimalist lifestyle helps balance his impact on society.

Matt recently opened his home to host Stacey Dooley on her show Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over. During her visit, Stacey explored the unique choices Matt and his family have made.
One key aspect of their lifestyle is the freedom given to their children—whether that’s sleeping in their parents’ bed or choosing when to eat or brush their teeth. For Matt, this approach is about respecting the children’s autonomy.

However, even with such liberties, Matt enforces strict guidelines concerning healthcare, opting out of vaccines and conventional medicine for his kids.
When questioned about his lifestyle, Matt confidently defended their choices: “Do we feel as if we’re abusing the system? I really don’t think we are. We have a minimalist impact on society,” he stated.
He went on to explain that they save public funds in specific areas, like not using hospitals for births and avoiding traditional schooling via homeschooling.

Stacey also touched on the common balancing act of working parents. Matt’s response? He firmly believes in putting family time above career obligations: “Spend more time with your kids – it’s simple.” For him, working long hours isn’t a priority.
Along with partner Adele, Matt shares their journey on Instagram, where they openly discuss their parenting philosophies. Adele mentioned they avoid traditional dental products like fluoridated toothpaste, emphasizing choice over enforcement.

The unconventional methods extend to learning, as the couple revealed their eight-year-old hasn’t learned to write his name yet. Still, Matt and Adele see no rush, believing their son will learn when he’s ready.
“What’s it stopping him from doing, other than meeting test requirements?” Adele questioned, confident in the homeschool path they have chosen.
Now, this story has certainly sparked conversations. What do you think of Matt’s approach? Feel free to discuss and share your thoughts!
