A Remarkable Act of Heroism

Brave Marine jumps on grenade to save fellow comrade – wins Medal of Honor

William Kyle Carpenter. You might have heard of him or maybe not, but one thing is for sure – he is a certified American hero.

At the young age of 21, Kyle earned the rank of Lance Corporal in the United States Marines and was sent to serve in Afghanistan in 2010.

A Life-Altering Sacrifice

During a fierce firefight, a grenade suddenly landed near Kyle and another Marine. Without a moment of hesitation, Kyle made a split-second decision that showcased his unwavering strength and courage. He jumped on the grenade, using his own body as a shield to protect his comrade.

In doing so, he willingly offered his own life to save another Marine.

The consequences were severe. Kyle sustained devastating injuries from the explosion, with shrapnel piercing his body. The bones in his skull and face were shattered, part of his jaw was lost, and one of his lungs collapsed. When he finally arrived at Camp Bastion, he was even declared P.E.A (patient expired on arrival).

Miraculous Survival and Recovery

Though technically declared dead, Kyle defied all odds and survived.

Over the next two years, he underwent an incredible forty surgeries to rebuild his body and regain his health. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, Kyle was awarded the Purple Heart, and the highest honor a military member can receive – the Medal of Honor. President Barack Obama personally presented this prestigious award to him.

A Life Beyond the Battlefield

Today, Kyle Carpenter is retired from military service and is pursuing a degree at the University of South Carolina.
