Oakley Debbs, an 11-year-old star athlete with asthma and food allergies, was enjoying Thanksgiving vacation in Maine with his family when tragedy struck. Despite being cautious about his allergies, he unknowingly consumed a piece of cake that contained nuts. This heartbreaking incident has prompted his family and friends to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents from happening to others.
Oakley was not only a top student but also loved playing tennis, football, soccer, and running marathons. Despite his health conditions, he was known for his bravery and determination to overcome obstacles.
On November 24, while staying at a cabin in Maine, Oakley had a piece of pound cake that was left on the kitchen table. Unaware that it contained nuts, he experienced an allergic reaction shortly after eating it. His parents immediately administered Benadryl, but Oakley’s condition quickly deteriorated. By the time emergency services arrived, it was too late. Oakley’s airway had closed, and his heart had stopped.
In their grief, Oakley’s family decided to honor his memory by creating the Red Sneaker Foundation. The foundation aims to educate people about anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. They chose red sneakers as a symbol because Oakley loved them, hoping to increase awareness about the dangers of food allergies.
Experts recommend using epinephrine for even mild allergic reactions, emphasizing the importance of being prepared. Oakley’s parents firmly believe that he could have made a difference if he had survived. They want to ensure that no other family experiences the same tragedy by spreading awareness about food allergies.
