How a Hot Tub Saved a Newborn Calf from the Snow

In cold weather, animals, just like humans, can suffer from serious conditions such as hypothermia and frostbite. It’s truly wonderful to witness people going above and beyond to keep them warm and safe.

One such heartwarming story comes from Rossville, Indiana, where a farmer named Dean Gangwer experienced a surprising turn of events on his farm one chilly morning back in 2015.

Dean had no idea that one of his cows had given birth during the night. To his surprise, he found the newborn calf lying on a pile of snow, fighting to survive in the freezing cold.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Dean swiftly took action. With his experience in caring for cattle, he knew that the calf needed a warm bath immediately. Fortunately, he had the perfect place—a hot tub—ready at his disposal.

The result was nothing short of miraculous. Dean recounted the rescue with a smile, saying, “Leroy and I had a nice bath for an hour. I got in fully clothed and held him up to keep him from drowning. We both came out of the tub warm, and I think he’ll be just fine.”

After the rejuvenating hot tub session, Dean wrapped Leroy in warming blankets. Once his body temperature had stabilized, he was ready to head back to the herd.

While Dean’s quick thinking and use of the hot tub saved Leroy’s life, he made it clear that this was a one-time event. “Leroy’s hot-tubbing days are over, but who knows, he might still enjoy sunbathing in the grass,” Dean chuckled.
