Gayle King Calls Out a Restaurant for Delivering a ‘Half-Eaten’ Pie — but Then Finishes It Herself

King admitted on ‘CBS Mornings’ that she thought the pie had just been jostled in transit: ‘I ate it because I had been thinking about it for three days!’

Gayle King wasn’t going to let anything stand between her and her dessert.

The veteran journalist told her CBS Mornings coanchors and guests Nate Burleson, Tony Dokoupil, Drew Barrymore and Ross Mathews about a recent pie fiasco.

“Picture this: I ordered a delicious coconut custard pie,” King began, sharing images of what the dessert is “supposed to look like.”

After sharing photos of picturesque pies, King showed a photo of what she actually received. Instead of a beautiful, whole slice of coconut pie, the plastic container contained only the pie crust and a bit of the coconut custard.

“I sent this picture to the company to complain about how it arrived,” King explained. “I wondered if it had been eaten or maybe just jostled during delivery because it was such a mess.”

She didn’t disclose the name of the company because she “really likes them” but said they told her that they were “mortified.” They suggested it could have been King’s doorman, but the journalist vehemently denied that.

She turned the question (Jostled or eaten?) to the people on the stage. One said, “It looks half-eaten!” while another person said, “It looks half-gone!” Another voice added, “It looks two-thirds eaten.”

“What happened to it? Did you throw it away?” Burleson asked.

“I ate it,” she admitted, bent over laughing in her chair. “Because I had been thinking about it for three days. I hadn’t had a sweet in three days. And I just couldn’t believe this company would send me something that was half-eaten.”

“Did you scrape off the part that had been eaten?” Mathews asked.

“I honest to god thought it had been jostled until I started asking people,” said King.

King made headlines for her honesty again in July when she and longtime friend Oprah Winfrey appeared on Melinda French Gates’ Moments That Make Us interview series.

In the episode aired on Wednesday, July 24, the women told Gates about the key to their friendship and their closeness that has been mistaken for something more.
