9 Stories About Family Members Who Are Worse Than Strangers

Family – sometimes, you get the best surprises and sometimes, the worst. You can’t choose your family, so we have to brace ourselves for all sorts of experiences.

Story 1:

My mother is obsessed with having grandkids and constantly pressures me about it, despite me not having a partner. On my third date with a man named Jake, we stepped out of a café, and there she was! My mother greeted us and then glanced at Jake, asking, “Well, when should I expect grandchildren?” Jake turned pale but quickly recovered, replying, “We haven’t decided yet!” © Caramel/VK

Story 2:

When I was around 12, I had long hair that I usually wore in a ponytail. My mother, grandmother, or friends would often braid it for me. One day, while visiting my aunt, my aunt got upset because my grandmother had braided my hair. In a fit of jealousy, she yanked my ponytail and chopped it off while my grandmother was out. When we returned home, my mother was horrified, and I was devastated because the short haircut didn’t suit me at all. I had to live with a bob when I just wanted to have long hair like Rapunzel. © MissXaker/Pikabu.

Story 3:

My sister invites our mother to Turkey for a vacation. But mom always replies, “I’m 70 years old, it’s hard for me, and I can’t do it!” Yet, every day, our parents work hard in the garden, growing organic potatoes that no one uses. And they insist, “Well, we have to exercise, it’s our hobby!” © Nachtwandler70 | Pikabu

Story 4:

My husband and I recently found out that we’re expecting a daughter and chose the name Ariadne, which we both love. When my husband told his family, my mother-in-law almost had a fit. She insisted our daughter must be named Maria after her grandmother. Despite presenting our case, no one in his family listened. The argument escalated, and I ended up in the hospital from the stress. Later, my husband suggested, “If Mom really wants it, we’ll name our daughter Maria, and we can pick the name for our next child.” I snapped and told him I would register our child’s name as I please. He reluctantly agreed, but I don’t want to damage our relationship further. © YOUZHEZMARRIED/VK

Story 5:

My spouse and I turn off our phones until at least 10 a.m. on weekends. One morning, I woke up to my husband hastily dressing up as the intercom buzzed. “Who is it?” I asked. “Police,” he replied. My mother had sent a text around 7 or 8 a.m. about her water meter, but neither of our phones were on. She freaked out, thinking we were missing, and called the police. Story 6:

I stopped inviting my son’s friend over because of his mother’s over-the-top rules. Hot dogs and grapes were choking hazards, hamburgers were not allowed, and no playing outside without an adult present. She even emailed us during school pancake fundraisers to approve the batter’s temperature. Once, while they were trying to get a kite out of a tree, her son was hesitant to climb. She sternly ordered him up, and he scrambled like a monkey. At that moment, I realized that being overprotective isn’t the norm. © FeatofClay / Reddit

Story 7:

Our family is in chaos after my husband’s father took a DNA test, revealing he is not his biological father. My mother-in-law didn’t deny it and said, “Who cares what happened 30 years ago?” Now, my father-in-law wants a divorce, and my husband is furious and feeling betrayed. The family dynamics have turned upside down. I’m shocked and unsure how to navigate through this turmoil. © Overheard/VK

Story 8:

My mother-in-law expects my husband to labor on her vegetable plot. When he suggested hiring help, she argued, “What are you for if you don’t want to do anything?” Since then, he hasn’t received a call, text, or visit from her. The peace and quiet have been incredible. © WendyMage/Pikabu.

Story 9:

When my child was 18 months old, my grandmother handed me a cup of juice, asking if I could give it to the baby. Without thinking, I took a sip to check the taste. I noticed something was wrong – it tasted off and rotten. I spit it out and asked her what it was. She admitted it was from a bloated jar with mold, and she wanted to test it on me first before giving it to the baby. I’m glad I caught it; who knows what could have happened otherwise. © Alidamai/Pikabu.
