Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue

Marlo Thomas, the beloved actress known for her role in “That Girl,” recently shared touching memories and messages of love in the weeks leading up to her husband Phil Donahue’s passing. The couple, who were married for 44 years, faced the heartbreaking reality of Donahue’s long illness, and Thomas seemed to have an intuition that the end was near.

In one Instagram post from July 25, Thomas shared a throwback photo of herself and Donahue embracing each other during a beautiful sunset. The photo was taken over a decade ago, but Thomas reflected on how they still enjoyed watching sunsets together. She captioned the image, “It’s hard to believe this was 15 years ago, it feels like yesterday. We still love to watch the sunset whether on land or water!” Little did she know that this would be her last Instagram post with her beloved husband.

A few weeks later, Thomas shared a quote by bestselling author Rachel Macy Stafford on August 7. The quote reminded everyone to let love be the beginning and end of each day. Alongside the quote, Thomas included a photo of two people hugging, symbolizing the power of love in our lives.

Shortly before Donahue’s passing, Thomas shared another meaningful quote, this time from Tennessee Williams. She quoted, “We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.” These poignant words emphasized the importance of love, especially in the face of life’s challenges.

In an emotional Instagram post the day after Donahue’s death, Thomas confirmed the news and expressed her need for a social media break to grieve. She thanked her followers for the outpouring of love and support that had been pouring in and acknowledged how her husband enjoyed being part of their close-knit community. Thomas concluded her message by extending her well wishes to her followers, encouraging them to hold their loved ones close and cherish the precious moments.

Phil Donahue was not only Thomas’ loving husband but also a television legend. His show, “The Phil Donahue Show,” captivated audiences for 29 years and featured esteemed guests such as Muhammad Ali, Whoopi Goldberg, and Billy Crystal. Donahue received numerous accolades, including 20 Emmy Awards, and made history with his groundbreaking interviews with Nelson Mandela and his groundbreaking broadcasts from the Soviet Union.

But beyond his illustrious career, Donahue leaves behind a lasting legacy as a devoted family man. He is survived by his five children from his first marriage, Margaret Cooney, and his grandchildren. Donahue’s impact extended to his beloved golden retriever, Charlie, as well.

In honor of Donahue’s memory, his family kindly requested donations to be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund.

Phil Donahue may have left this world, but his love and legacy will forever live on in the hearts of all those who had the pleasure of knowing him, including his adoring wife, Marlo Thomas.
