As he attempted to park, the wheels of his car got stuck in what he thought was a flowerbed, and he heard odd cracking noises coming from the driveway. Frustrated, he knelt down to inspect the issue and noticed the driveway pavers had cracked. The sound of those cracking pavers hinted at something unusual beneath.
Curious, Marks removed some dirt and uncovered a piece of metal. He tried to pull it out but couldn’t. Uncertain about what it could be, he called his father for assistance. Together, they removed lots of tightly packed mud, eventually revealing an opening with an old rusty ladder.
Marks’ father immediately recognized it, exclaiming, “It’s an air raid shelter!” They did some research and discovered there were many such shelters in the area, particularly from World War II.
Marks explained that the previous homeowner likely knew about the shelter and filled it in when building the house and garden. The discovery revealed a piece of history meant to protect residents from bombings during the war. These shelters were attributed to Sir John Anderson.
“One of the walls has been bricked up. I’m 90 percent sure we won’t find any more rooms, but we don’t know. The wall might have been bricked up when the house’s foundations were laid,” Marks speculated. “If that’s the case, we’ll just have to leave it as it is.”
