Tributes have been pouring in for Johnny Wactor, the beloved General Hospital star, from family members and fellow actors.
Johnny, who was just 37 years old, was tragically shot and killed in Los Angeles on a Saturday morning. He was trying to protect a coworker from thieves attempting to steal his catalytic converter.
Around 3:25 am, Johnny was escorting a coworker to her car after their shift at a rooftop bar when the horrific incident occurred.
His brother Grant shared with the Daily Mail, “We’re Southern by birth and blood, and we would never let a woman walk to her car by herself.”
Grant revealed that Johnny initially thought his car was being towed because he noticed three masked men near it.
When one of the men pointed a gun at Johnny, he stepped aside to shield his coworker from the gunfire.
“My brother worked harder than anyone else I’ve ever known. He was a wonderful son and brother,” Grant told the news outlet.
The three suspects are still at large and are currently being investigated by the LAPD.
Fans and colleagues were quick to pay tribute to Johnny, known for his role as Brando Corbin on the popular soap opera, General Hospital.
William deVry, a fellow actor on General Hospital, described Johnny’s death as “senseless” in a heartfelt post.
“I’m struggling to find the right words to express my sorrow over the loss of another #GHAlum,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “There are no words to describe how pointless this loss is.”
“Johnny was a wonderful person. This is just so tragic. Rest in peace, Johnny Wactor. Sending love and comfort to his family and friends.”
Parry Shen, who portrayed Brad Cooper on the daytime soap, also honored his friend, praising Johnny’s “beautiful soul.”
“Johnny Wactor had such a beautiful soul. So much talent,” Shen wrote. “As you can see from his work, he was always ready for anything. Truly hilarious. He maintained his fitness but also indulged in ice cream and junk food occasionally.”
“We have all been robbed of many more years with him.”
Sofia Mattsson, who played Johnny’s on-screen wife, shared a touching tribute on Instagram.
“Johnny was the best. So genuine. So caring. Very humble and very hardworking,” she wrote. “With a big heart that spread joy and kindness to everyone around him. He always ensured that everyone felt loved, seen, and heard.”
“I admire the man he was immensely and am a better person for having known him.”
She added that spending time with Johnny was always a pleasure and that she cherished all the wonderful moments they shared, both on and off screen. “I will miss you so much, Johnny… I’m sure that you’re up there looking after everyone.”
Johnny Wactor’s untimely death deeply affected the General Hospital family, who expressed their sorrow.
“The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken to hear of Johnny Wactor’s untimely passing,” they shared in a statement. “He was truly one of a kind, and it was an honor to work with him every day.”
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Robyn Bernard, another General Hospital alum, passed away in San Jacinto, California, on March 12, 2019, at the age of 64. Though unrelated, her death has been a somber reminder of the fragility of life.
Grant spoke of the profound grief their family is experiencing. He told The Los Angeles Times, “My mother is tough as nails, but she’s broken to the core.”
“We need to bring Johnny back to Charleston. It’s a tragedy. It was just the wrong place and time.”
Grant also mentioned that his older brother “lived his life the way he wanted, even up until the last day.”
Johnny’s mother shared in a statement, “He was a kind, loving son and brother, and he lived life to the fullest. He made plans and followed through. Our hearts and lives have a very big hole in them.”
The case is currently under investigation by the Central Division Homicide Unit of the Los Angeles Police Department.
