Fellowes was the son of Scots Guards Major Sir William Fellowes, the Queen’s land agent at Sandringham, and of his wife Jane Charlotte Ferguson, daughter of Brigadier-General Algernon Francis Holford Ferguson (great-grandfather of Sarah, Duchess of York).
Lord Robert Fellowes, who was Prince William and Prince Harry’s uncle by marriage, has sadly passed away at the age of 82. Lord Fellowes, who was married to Lady Jane Fellowes, Princess Diana’s sister, and served as Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretary, died on July 29 from undisclosed causes. Plans for his funeral are yet to be revealed.
Lord Fellowes held a prominent position within the royal family and was considered one of the late Queen’s most trusted advisors during his tenure from 1990 to 1999. He provided counsel to Queen Elizabeth on the divorces of three of her children and played a significant role in navigating the aftermath of Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997.
Married to Lady Jane Fellowes for 46 years, Lord Fellowes shared a deep connection with the royal family. Their wedding in 1978 was a grand affair, with the late Princess of Wales serving as a bridesmaid. The couple were blessed with three children: Alexander Robert, Eleanor Ruth, and Laura Jane, who is also Princess Charlotte’s godmother.
Lord Fellowes climbed the ranks at Buckingham Palace, eventually becoming the deputy private secretary in 1986. Four years later, he took over as the private secretary, succeeding Sir William Heseltine. In February 1999, Lord Fellowes stepped down from his role as private secretary and returned to the private sector as a banker.
In recognition of his service, Lord Fellowes was bestowed the title of Baron Fellowes of Shotesham in the County of Norfolk in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List of that year. He later became a Crossbench Peer, serving as a member of Parliament without allegiance to any political party, until his retirement in 2022.
Even after leaving his official position, Lord Fellowes retained his ties to the royal household. He remained an extra equerry to the late Queen until her passing in September 2022 at the age of 96. As an extra equerry, Lord Fellowes held an honorary role, called upon if needed by senior members of the Firm.
Lord Fellowes shared a close friendship with Prince Harry and Prince William. He attended both the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales at Westminster Abbey in 2011 and the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Windsor Castle in 2018. His character was portrayed in the popular Netflix series “The Crown,” where actor Andrew Havill brought him to life.
Lord Robert Fellowes will be remembered as a devoted family member, trusted advisor, and esteemed member of the royal household. His presence and influence within the royal family will be greatly missed.
