Why Women Should Stop Peeing In The Shower

We’re not here to shame anyone! It’s pretty common, and let’s face it, a lot of shower pee-ers are out there. So, ladies, are you going to admit to it? Our legal team advises us to neither confirm nor deny.

Luckily, if you are among those guilty of this habit, you are not alone. According to Shape Magazine, a whopping 80% of people they surveyed confessed to peeing in the shower.

This might seem harmless to most, but some doctors advise women against it. We’re curious why they’d say that, and no, we’re neither confirming nor denying our habits.

This curiosity led us to some scientific insights. Dr. Alicia Jeffrey Thomas recently shared some important news on TikTok, where she goes by the username @scrambledjam. It turns out, this habit could be detrimental to our health.

Gynecologist Dr. Stacey Picart explains further. “If your pelvic floor muscles are tight and prevent your bladder from completely emptying, this can make you prone to recurrent urinary tract infections,” Dr. Picart says. Peeing in the shower may actually be training our bodies to follow unhealthy practices.

“If you habitually urinate in the shower without really needing to, you train your bladder to get used to emptying at much lower volumes and therefore lose the ability to hold higher volumes of urine,” she warns. “You might even train your brain to recognize the sound of running water as a signal to empty your bladder, which can be a problem if you feel the urge every time you hear a tap running!”

Personally, holding higher volumes isn’t a major concern – road trips and daily routines seem to ensure we manage that well enough. It’s not like one occasional shower pee will make us forget how to control our bladder, right?
