We often hear stories about children who face difficulties getting into school for various reasons. Sometimes it’s due to personal choices they make, but it’s always troubling when the school system isn’t accommodating.
This brings us to the story of an eight-year-old boy in London named Farouk James. Farouk has a unique background, with a Caucasian mother and a father from Ghana. To honor his father’s heritage, his mother chose not to cut his hair until he was three years old.
During an interview with Good Morning America, his mother shared that while they didn’t cut his hair until he was three, they hadn’t anticipated it would continue to grow as it has.
Farouk has curly, distinctive hair, which he describes as being truly unique. He has made a personal decision to never cut his hair, a choice his mother fully supports. However, this has become a point of contention with the school system.
Farouk’s mother, Miller, has been searching for schools, but many have strict policies regarding hair. Unfortunately, these rules often don’t permit Farouk’s hairstyle.
One school in particular has policies that prohibit dreadlocks or any extreme hairstyles. They specify that the maximum hair length must not touch the collar, and the shortest allowed cut is a number two.
Another school has a gender-specific regulation, permitting long hair for girls but requiring boys to keep their hair short.
