It’s an unfortunate fact of life that no matter what you do, how successful you are, or how kind you try to be, there are always people ready to bring you down.
This is especially true in the world of showbiz, where celebrities live their lives in the public eye and often have their every move scrutinized and discussed.
Is it fair? No, not at all. But one could argue that by choosing a life of fame and being constantly in the spotlight, celebrities are more susceptible to criticism of one form or another.
However, I firmly believe no one should be harshly judged based on their appearance, regardless of how much money they have.
This is why I find it confusing that singer-songwriter Katy Perry recently caused a debate by posting three photos and a video to Instagram while dressed in a skimpy two-piece bikini and visor.
An icon in the music industry for over a decade, it’s likely Perry has developed a tough skin to handle whatever people say. Yet, that doesn’t make it right.
In the photos and video, Perry was seen standing on a balcony, reportedly drinking a can of Drink De Soi, a non-alcoholic beverage brand she co-founded with Morgan McLachlan last year. The post certainly divided opinions.
One of the images showed Perry holding the drink in her left hand while raising her right leg. Hardly extreme, but it didn’t stop some internet users from making negative comments.
One person simply wrote: “WHAT IS THIS.”
Another criticized Perry’s post as “Unethical.”
Yet another commenter took aim at her age, writing: “Ur getting old Katy.”
A fourth added: “Pissed.”
On the flip side, many others took the opportunity to praise the superstar.
“It’s the balcony energy we needed,” one user wrote.
“I would be straight for you,” joked another.
“An absolute SLAY!!!! She is SPRITZING,” said a third.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Perry’s choice of outfit has sparked discussion online. Back in April, the 39-year-old narrowly avoided a wardrobe malfunction during a live episode of American Idol.
The Daisies hitmaker’s futuristic top broke right before contestant Roman Collins took the stage to sing James Brown’s It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.
“I need my top to stay on,” Perry said in a behind-the-scenes video posted to her Instagram. “If it’s not fixed, this show is going to get more than it wanted.”
