Imagine growing up with a reading disorder, being called “dumb”, and feeling like you’re not good enough. This was the reality for Henry Winkler, famously known as Fonzie on the hit TV show Happy Days. But despite the challenges he faced, Winkler never gave up on his dreams.
Born to immigrant parents who had escaped Nazi Germany, Winkler struggled with an undiagnosed reading disorder. Sadly, his parents didn’t understand his condition and labeled him as “dumb”, even calling him a ‘Dummo Hund’ which means dumb dog. This had a profound impact on his self-image and made his upbringing even more difficult.
Dreams Against All Odds
Despite the hardships he faced, Winkler remained determined to pursue his dreams. He encountered rejection from 26 out of the 28 colleges he applied to, but he didn’t let that discourage him. In a stroke of fate, he received an acceptance letter from the prestigious Yale School of Drama. It was during an improvised Shakespearean monologue that his true talent shone, propelling him to success.
The Battle with Dyslexia
Although Winkler excelled on-screen, playing the charismatic Fonzie, his dyslexia still posed challenges in his reading and coordination. He even turned down the lead role in Grease to avoid being typecast, even though it was a great opportunity. However, everything changed for Winkler when his stepson Jed went through a dyslexia test at the age of 31. It was then that Winkler realized he and Jed shared the same struggle. He finally acknowledged dyslexia as a silent barrier that had impacted his own life.
Instead of letting dyslexia hold him back, Winkler overcame auditions by memorizing scripts and used humor to mask any inadequacies. He fully embodied the essence of the characters he portrayed, showcasing his undeniable talent.

Even after Happy Days, Winkler continued to explore various acting roles and even had a hand in creating the MacGyver series. He faced transitional phases and the challenges that came with them, but his determination and undeniable talent ultimately prevailed.
