Meet Robert Kawada, a 43-year-old man from Massachusetts who stands accused of a heinous act of deception. It is alleged that he gave his ex-girlfriend abortion pills, disguising them as harmless iron supplements and vitamins, which tragically led to the loss of her pregnancy.
The authorities revealed that Kawada and the victim were in a dating relationship, and she became pregnant. Shockingly, he secretly gave her medication, tricking her into believing it was for her health. Unfortunately, this medication was intended to terminate the pregnancy. The victim suffered a miscarriage after taking the pills, including Misoprostol, which is commonly used in medication for abortion.
Misoprostol and mifepristone are two medications often used together for abortion, as stated by Planned Parenthood. While they are typically used in combination, Misoprostol can also be taken on its own.
According to the victim’s statement, she met Kawada on a dating app, and the two had consensual unprotected sex. Their relationship ended in March, and she later discovered she was pregnant. Over the course of the following six weeks, they met several times to discuss the situation.
During one of their meetings, Kawada gave her pills claiming they were iron supplements or vitamins. It was later revealed that these pills were actually misoprostol, a medication used for abortion. He also gave her raspberry leaf cookies.
Authorities stated that raspberry leaf tea is known to induce labor and could potentially cause a miscarriage, particularly in the first trimester. Kawada went to great lengths to assure the woman, claiming his father was an OB-GYN and that he had personal experience with pregnancy from his previous marriage.
During their final meetings, Kawada accused the woman of lying about taking the iron pills and even suggested that she had set him up with the pregnancy. He blamed the pregnancy for his mother’s death, claiming she wanted the woman to have an abortion. Despite Kawada’s wishes for termination, the woman wanted to keep the baby and raise it herself.
On the day of the miscarriage, the woman received a call from someone claiming to be a nurse who encouraged her to take the iron pills. Kawada also assured her that he had the medicine she needed. Subsequently, the alleged fake nurse called again and instructed her to take two more of the pills.
That evening, the woman began experiencing severe cramping and blood discharge, indicative of a miscarriage. When she contacted the nurse, she learned that the person was not a real nurse, as they had claimed earlier.
Feeling extreme distress, the woman reached out to her family, who promptly contacted the authorities. She handed over the pills Kawada had given her. The hospital later confirmed that she had indeed suffered a miscarriage. Kawada initially claimed to have given her “vitamin C and iron pills” ordered from Amazon, but his phone records and search history revealed a different story.
Investigators found evidence that Kawada had made calls to a pharmacy selling misoprostol following the woman’s ultrasound appointment. He also contacted the same number as the supposed fake nurse, and his search history included disturbing searches such as “misoprostol dissolved,” “9 week aborted fetus pics,” and “no reaction to misoprostol.”
Kawada was arrested on charges of poisoning, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a pregnant person, and assault and battery on a household or family member. He has pleaded not guilty, and his bail has been set at $100,000.
His lawyer, Dmitry Lev, expressed their anticipation for a thorough investigation and a fair trial. This story is a chilling reminder of the importance of trust and the devastating consequences when it is violated.
