In a heartfelt update, Jason Carter, the grandson of former president Jimmy Carter, shared the latest on his grandfather’s health. Speaking at the 28th Rosalynn Carter Georgia Mental Health Forum, Jason provided insight into Jimmy Carter’s condition.
According to Jason, Jimmy Carter has been in hospice care for nearly a year and a half, but he is “doing OK.” This phase of his life has become an important part of his faith journey, and Jason believes his grandfather is entering a space reserved for the very end.
Despite facing various health challenges over the years, including metastatic brain and liver cancer, as well as brain surgery, Jimmy Carter has shown incredible resilience. In 2018, he even became the oldest living president after the passing of George H.W. Bush at the age of 94.
After a series of hospital stays, Jimmy made the decision to enter hospice care in February 2023 at his longtime home in Plains, Georgia. The difficult loss of his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, in November 2023 further impacted him. Jason expressed gratitude for the love and support they received from people around the world, which turned the process into a celebration.
During a recent encounter while watching an Atlanta Braves game together, Jason shared a touching conversation he had with his grandfather. When people ask about Jimmy’s well-being, he responds, “I don’t know,” to which Jimmy himself replied, “Well, I don’t know myself.”
As Jimmy Carter continues on his long and eventful journey, it is bittersweet to receive updates about his health. The impact he has made on the world and his unwavering spirit are truly remarkable.
