We all go through tough periods in our lives, where we may fall on hard times and struggle to make ends meet. And in those moments, what we need most is the love and support of those around us, helping us get back on our feet. This is particularly true for our brave veterans, who have served their country with honor and selflessness.
Unfortunately, many veterans find themselves struggling to make a living after returning from duty. The benefits they receive often fall short, and some are left wondering where to turn in civilian life. One such person is Larry Robeson, a Vietnam veteran who was barely able to afford basic necessities and unsure of his next steps.
But fate had something special in store for Larry. In a grocery store in Las Vegas, he crossed paths with the Fox 5 Surprise Squad, a team that pays for people’s groceries as an act of kindness. Larry had brought his friend Stephanie, a disabled fellow veteran, to the store. Stephanie, down to her last $50, was buying food for herself and her dogs, not knowing what she would do afterwards.
When Dave Hall, the reporter leading the Surprise Squad, learned of Stephanie’s situation, he happily informed her that their team would cover the cost of her groceries. Stephanie was overjoyed and immensely grateful for the generous offer. But Dave noticed Larry standing quietly behind Stephanie, and something caught his attention.
It turned out that Larry had founded the Bones for Blankets club many years prior. This club’s purpose was to donate blankets to homeless veterans who had found themselves on the streets after their service. Larry had started the club out of heartbreak, after three fellow veterans froze to death. He wanted to prevent any more veterans from suffering the same fate.
Larry explained that he kept Stephanie company and helped her out due to the challenges she faced as a result of her disability. As he told the Surprise Squad, “No vet should be going through what she’s going through.”
Feeling deeply moved by Larry’s selflessness and dedication to his fellow veterans, Dave Hall insisted that Larry would not leave the store without the Surprise Squad team paying for his groceries as well. Initially, Larry had only planned to purchase dish soap and candy, but Dave made it clear that it was their turn to serve him.
Larry was overwhelmed with emotion as he walked around the store, picking out whatever he desired. When the bill came to $278, Dave and the rest of the team settled it without hesitation. Tears welled up in Larry’s eyes as he realized the extent of the kindness he was receiving.
“I’ve been taking care of myself since I was 13,” Larry expressed, his voice shaky.
