It is deeply disheartening to witness the level of vitriol and hatred that has been directed towards Dylan Mulvaney and me in response to a post about National Women’s Day. I believe it is crucial to address the fact that this is not simply “backlash,” but rather an expression of pure hatred. Hatred should never be justified or dismissed.
The fact that we still have a long way to go as a society in order to fully embrace and support transgender lives is not surprising. In this moment, I feel a strong sense of protectiveness not only towards Dylan, but also towards the trans community who consistently exhibit grace and inspiration despite facing constant degradation, intolerance, and various forms of violence.
While I do not claim to speak for the entirety of the trans community, I do want to make my voice heard. On International Women’s Day, I hope that all women can unite to celebrate the achievements and existence of us all. Let us strive for equality, not only for women but for all individuals, regardless of gender identity or race. Let us create a world where everyone is respected and deserving of peace and dignity.
It is my sincere wish that we can come together with love, acceptance, warmth, and inclusivity. Let us acknowledge and honor the complexity and challenges faced by the transgender community, and strive to genuinely understand and empathize with their experiences. I am vehemently against labeling this hatred as “backlash” – it is a disservice to all people who deserve better.
