It’s truly heartbreaking to hear about the cruelty some people inflict upon innocent animals. One such story is that of Riona, a sweet pup who endured unimaginable pain after her owner set her on fire last year. However, after a year of recovery and resilience, Riona is now getting ready to start a brand new chapter in her life – in her forever home.
In June last year, the residents of Nutbush, Tennessee were horrified when they witnessed Riona, a pitbull mix, running down the street engulfed in flames. The smell of gas in the air made it clear that this was an intentional act of cruelty.
Riona’s ear was burnt off, and she was covered in diesel fuel, confirming that she had indeed been set on fire. Thanks to the quick response of emergency medical professionals, her left eye was saved. She was taken in by Tails of Hope Dog Rescue and received medical treatment at Bluff City Veterinary Specialists, where her skin was protected with full-body wraps.
Riona’s incredible story spread like wildfire, capturing the hearts of millions of people worldwide. A TikTok video documenting her journey went viral, generating an outpouring of support and sympathy for this brave survivor.
Despite the trauma she endured, Riona remained in good spirits throughout her recovery. Mallory Mclemore of Bluff City Veterinary Specialists remarked, “She’s just always wagging her tail. That’s what makes it even worse, I guess. Not that it would ever be OK, but just being so sweet and for somebody to do something like this to her. She just loves everybody.”
During her healing process, Riona received multiple skin grafts to treat the severe burns that covered her body. Tails of Hope continued to provide updates on her progress, and people from all over the world sent donations and gifts to support her journey.
In a positive turn of events, Riona’s story played a pivotal role in the passing of a new animal cruelty bill in Tennessee. Her resilience and bravery sparked a change, ensuring that justice would be served for animals who suffer at the hands of cruelty.
Months went by, and gradually, Riona’s condition improved. And recently, nearly a year after the harrowing incident, a heartwarming update emerged – Riona found her forever home!
Tails of Hope proudly announced that they would be embarking on a ten-hour road trip to bring Riona to her new family. “Our goal was to get her a forever home, and that’s exactly what we found,” said Ginger Natoli, the founder of Tails of Hope. Riona’s new home offers the company of other dogs and children, a spacious yard to play in, and a family with a medical background, fully understanding her past injuries.
“Riona’s story is not coming to an end; in fact, it is just beginning,” wrote the rescue organization on Facebook. “We have all been a part of this miracle, our ‘warrior’ girl.”
