Researchers at McAfee discovered that by placing a two-inch piece of electrical tape on a speed limit sign, they could manipulate the Tesla’s perception of the speed limit. For example, by obstructing part of the number “3” on the sign that indicated a 35 miles per hour limit, the Tesla misread it as 85 miles per hour.
In a demonstration involving a Tesla Model X from 2016, the vehicle was fooled by the altered sign while in cruise control. The car accelerated to 50 miles per hour before the driver realized the dangerous situation they were in.
Tesla Faces Scrutiny
This revelation couldn’t come at a worse time for Tesla, as the company is already under investigation for numerous complaints regarding “sudden unintended acceleration.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there have been 110 crashes and 52 injuries linked to this issue.
