It’s been 27 years since Maryanne and Tommy Pilling made history by becoming the first-ever couple with Down syndrome to marry. But their journey was not without challenges. They faced prejudice and discrimination from narrow-minded people due to their condition.
The couple met at a training center for people with learning difficulties. It was love at first sight when they first laid eyes on each other while working in the kitchen. Maryanne, who was born in 1971, was fortunate to have a loving mother and sister who supported her unconditionally. However, her father rejected her after her birth.
Tommy, born in 1958, had a difficult childhood and became an orphan at a young age. He grew up in a care home in Essex. When he met Maryanne, he was 32, while she was only 19. Despite the age difference, their connection was undeniable.
Maryanne’s mother, Linda, vividly remembers the day Maryanne met Tommy. She came home with the biggest smile on her face, unable to stop talking about him. Tommy and Maryanne shared many interests, including cooking, watching movies, and dining out.
After 18 months of dating, Tommy knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Maryanne. However, he wouldn’t propose until her mother gave her blessing. Maryanne’s family was initially hesitant due to the criticism and negativity they faced from the community. On July 15, 1995, Tommy and Maryanne celebrated their dream wedding in a beautiful church in Essex. Maryanne looked radiant in her white dress, and Tommy was dapper in his made-to-measure suit. They exchanged vows surrounded by their loved ones.
During the first seven years of their marriage, the couple lived with Maryanne’s sister, Linda. They then moved into a house next door, allowing them to have their own space while still having support close by.
