Tragic Loss: Common Virus Claims Life of Four-Year-Old Girl

A devastating turn of events has left an Ohio couple shattered after their four-year-old daughter, Maisie Schmidt, lost her life to a common virus that took a deadly turn. Despite the best efforts of doctors, Maisie’s condition rapidly declined, leading to her untimely death. Let’s delve into the heartbreaking details of this story.

Ohio parents ‘torn to shreds’ after common virus claims life of loving four-year-old

In late March, Maisie’s parents, Christin Brigadier and Patric Schmidt, rushed her to the doctors when she started showing signs of a cold. However, the medical experts assured them that it was just a common cold and advised them to give her plenty of fluids and rest at home.

Trusting the doctors’ advice, the parents took Maisie back home. But just a few days later, Maisie’s health took a turn for the worse. She became lethargic, prompting her concerned parents to rush her to the emergency room.

Maisie’s uncle, Michael Brigadier, created a GoFundMe page to support Maisie, her big brother, and her parents. He described how Maisie was left “fighting for her life” due to the human metapneumovirus (hMPV), a virus similar to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the flu.

Despite the medical team’s efforts, Maisie’s condition continued to worsen. She was placed in a medically induced coma at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Her parents were devastated and shocked by the sudden turn of events, as they had expected her illness to be minor.

On March 25, doctors discovered that Maisie had suffered a stroke and required brain surgery. Unfortunately, her condition was critical, and a part of her swollen brain had to be removed in an attempt to save her life. The family was informed that Maisie would remain on life support and in a medically induced coma for several months.

Tragically, on March 26, Maisie’s family made the heart-wrenching decision to take her off life support. Despite their immense grief, they issued a statement expressing that there was nothing more they could have done.

Maisie’s uncle, Brigadier, shared the heartbreaking news of her passing on the GoFundMe page. He described Maisie as a loving, caring, smart, and fun girl and expressed his disbelief that such a tragedy could occur to such a kind-hearted family.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Maisie’s family and loved ones. Losing a child is an unimaginable pain, and we hope they find solace in the memories they shared with Maisie. Let us remember Maisie by spreading love and cherishing our relationships with our loved ones.
