College Student Fakes Frostbite for Million-Dollar Insurance Claim

Can you imagine going to such extremes just to make some quick money? Well, in this unbelievable case, two college students took it to a whole new level. Let’s dive into the shocking details of what they did.

A male college student named Chang from Taiwan is currently facing serious charges for insurance fraud. He attempted to make a false claim for an insurance payout of over $1.3 million. But brace yourself for what he did to make that claim.

Chang pretended that his legs had to be amputated due to frostbite from riding his bike in the freezing weather. It turns out that this was a complete fabrication, as revealed by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).

Believe it or not, Chang actually submerged his feet in a bucket of dry ice for a staggering 10 hours. This reckless act resulted in severe frostbite and ultimately led to his legs being amputated below the knees. It’s hard to comprehend why someone would go to such extreme lengths for money.

After his legs were amputated, Chang wasted no time in applying for compensation from eight insurance policies. He claimed a total of NT$41.26 million (US$1.3 million), citing injuries he supposedly obtained while riding his scooter at night.

However, his claims were immediately flagged and eventually denied by the insurance companies. The reason? The policies had been recently purchased, raising suspicions about the validity of the claims. The insurance companies sensed that something was amiss.

In an attempt to defend himself, Chang alleged that a fellow student named Liao had warned him about gang members who were after him. This fear supposedly pushed him to fabricate the insurance claim. But the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office was not convinced by these assertions.

As investigations unfolded, it was discovered that Chang and Liao were high school classmates who lost touch after university. They reconnected later on, and Chang was working in an administrative role at a school where Liao was studying.

The shocking incident took place on January 26, 2023. Chang and Liao rode their scooters to buy dry ice in New Taipei City and then went to Liao’s home in Taipei City’s Zhongshan District. There, they restrained Chang to a chair using cable ties. Chang proceeded to submerge his feet in a plastic bucket filled with dry ice for a horrifying 10 hours, while Liao filmed and took pictures of the entire incident.

Two days later, Chang was admitted to Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taiwan’s capital city. After a week of treatment, doctors had no choice but to amputate both his legs below the knees.

Chang did manage to receive over NT$230,000 ($7,222.30) through some of his insurance claims. However, the insurance companies became suspicious of the recent policy purchases and reported the case to the authorities.

This astonishing story left people in disbelief. Many could not fathom the pain that Chang willingly subjected himself to for money. One reader shared, “I handle dry ice occasionally, and I can’t even imagine the agony he must have endured.” Another commented, “I’d rather have my legs and be broke.”

This intense account serves as a reminder of the extremes some individuals are willing to go to for financial gain. Share this unbelievable story with others who might find it equally fascinating.
