Meet Lauren Wasser, a Californian model who went to the hospital in 2012 with flu-like symptoms. Little did she know that her life was about to change drastically. It turned out that she was not suffering from the flu, but rather from toxic shock syndrome (TTS) caused by bacterial toxins, a condition that can be triggered by using tampons, especially if left for extended periods.
The TTS left Lauren in a coma for over a week, and when she finally woke up, she faced a devastating reality – her leg had to be amputated due to the severe infection. She was only 24 years old at the time. This life-altering experience ignited a fierce determination in Lauren to ensure that no one else would have to endure the same ordeal.
“In a few months, I’m inevitably going to have my other leg amputated. There’s nothing I can do about it. But what I can do is help make sure that this doesn’t happen to others,” shares Lauren with The Daily Mail. She launched a courageous legal battle against Kotex Natural Balance, the tampon brand that caused her severe reaction.
Lauren emphasizes the importance of consumer awareness, stating, “Considering that the vagina is the most absorbent part of a woman’s body and a gateway to many of our vital organs, it is crucial that consumers know the reality of what could happen to them.” Her mission is to prevent others from experiencing the same devastating consequences.
Despite the challenges she continues to face, Lauren remains an inspiration to many. Recently, she had to undergo the amputation of her other leg. However, as soon as she left the operating room, she posted a photo on her social media accounts with Paralympic athlete Amy Purdy, who also had her legs amputated. Alongside the photo, Lauren shared a powerful message:
