Tattoos have become a worldwide phenomenon, with an astounding estimated 225 million people proudly wearing at least one tattoo on their bodies, according to Gitnux. These intricate designs serve as personal expressions of identity, beliefs, and art.
However, every tattoo artist faces unique challenges when it comes to working with clients of different body types. Sometimes, the physical features of clients can pose obstacles to the intended designs. Recently, a tattoo artist turned to the internet community for guidance after a challenging encounter with a plus-sized client.
In this particular case, the artist and the client initially agreed on a geometric/jewelry tattoo design for the client’s stomach/underboob area. However, upon closer examination of the client’s torso, which the artist described as “a series of folds,” they realized that the proposed design might not translate well onto the client’s body.
The artist noticed that the folds on the client’s stomach and ribs could potentially cause the tattoo to either go into those areas or skip over them, resulting in significant gaps if the client lost weight in the future. In addition, the artist also observed that the cleanliness of the client’s folds left much to be desired.
Approaching the situation with sensitivity, the artist explained the limitations to the client and suggested alternative placements or designs that would better suit her physique. However, instead of considering the artist’s professional advice, the client reacted strongly and accused the artist of fat-phobia.
Ultimately, the artist decided not to proceed with the tattoo, as the client’s behavior influenced their decision. The artist sought opinions from fellow artists and Redditors, who overwhelmingly supported their choice to refuse further service. They emphasized the importance of maintaining artistic integrity and pointed out the unhygienic nature of attempting to tattoo unwashed folded skin.
