Take the remarkable story of Kennedy Garcia, for example. Born with Down syndrome in Colorado Springs, Colorado, she faced immense challenges from the very beginning. Doctors strongly advised her mother to put Kennedy in an institution, believing she would have a low quality of life. She told me that my daughter was beautiful, just like her own daughter who had Down syndrome. That glimmer of hope was all I needed.”
Kennedy’s journey has shattered every obstacle in her path. She has modeled for American Girl and Justice Clothing and is signed with KMR Diversity and Dream Talent Management. She travels to Hollywood and New York regularly for auditions and modelling jobs and finds joy in spending time with her boyfriend, Matthew, who also has Down syndrome.
As for the doctors who advised placing Kennedy in an institution, Renee holds a strong opinion. She says, “It’s shocking how misinformed they all were, and that was just 15 years ago. I regret wasting time grieving for moments like prom dress shopping because I was led to believe that none of these normal milestones would be reached.”
Renee and Kennedy now visit schools, educating children of all ages about Down syndrome and how they can support individuals with this condition. Kennedy herself has garnered a large following on social media, with nearly 70,000 Instagram followers.
“We are incredibly proud of her and everything she has achieved,” says Renee. “Kennedy is a remarkable girl, and we are so lucky to have her in our lives.”
