Burger King Closes Hundreds of Locations as It Navigates Challenges

Fast food giant Burger King recently announced its plan to close between 300 and 400 locations in the United States by the end of 2023. This decision comes as the company aims to address underperforming stores and improve its financial standing in a demanding industry.

Even major fast food chains like Burger King face challenges, and the chain’s first-quarter earnings results fell short of expectations. By reducing the number of locations across the country, Burger King hopes to cut costs and navigate the tough landscape of the fast food industry successfully.

As of March, Burger King had already closed 124 locations this year. Currently, there are 6,964 open restaurants in the United States, but this number is expected to change significantly in the coming months with more closures. The company recognizes that sales performance varies across different locations and is actively seeking new franchisees who are dedicated and capable of driving success in their local communities.

Chairman Patrick Doyle emphasized the importance of franchisees committed to excellence, stating, “We’ll work with them to leave the system and move on to do something else. There simply is no room for franchisees who are not willing or able to work hard to operate restaurants that are better than the system average over the long term.”

Burger King’s ranking as the second-largest burger chain in the country was overtaken by Wendy’s in 2020, with McDonald’s remaining in the top spot. This change in ranking reflects the challenges Burger King has faced, especially during the pandemic year.
