Gary Sinise, beloved actor and humanitarian, has recently faced immense sorrow with the passing of his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, at the young age of 33. Mac had been battling an aggressive form of cancer called Chordoma since 2018. Tragically, he lost his battle on January 5th. Gary, along with his wife Moira Harris Sinise, has been grappling with the profound grief of losing a child while also supporting each other through Moira’s own cancer journey.
Gary shared the heartbreaking news of Mac’s death on the Gary Sinise Foundation’s website and his Instagram page. As a family, they have been managing their grief as best they can. Gary acknowledges the pain of losing a loved one, expressing empathy for others who have experienced similar losses. Over the years, he has met many families of fallen heroes and knows firsthand the heartbreak they endure.
The Sinise family’s cancer fight lasted for 5 ½ years, and it was an increasingly challenging journey. Despite the difficulties, Gary finds solace in knowing that Mac is no longer struggling and draws inspiration from his son’s unwavering determination. Mac fought tirelessly against an incurable cancer, never giving up.
Amidst Mac’s battle, Moira received her cancer diagnosis in 2018, which added an additional layer of hardship for the family. Gary describes the double diagnosis as a devastating blow. Moira’s strength was tested as she faced her health battle while witnessing her son’s struggle. Throughout her life, she has shown resilience in overcoming various obstacles. In the 1990s, Moira battled alcoholism and underwent multiple back surgeries. Gary supported her in breaking free from addiction and sought help from AI-Anon Family Groups. Moira successfully conquered her alcohol dependency and remained sober for nearly three decades.
In 2018, Moira faced another challenge when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Despite the grueling treatments, she achieved remission and has remained cancer-free. However, tragedy struck the family when Mac’s health deteriorated, leading to his passing in January 2024. Gary admires Moira’s unwavering dedication to their son, emphasizing the profound bond they shared.
